Overall

Overall, Pearson's Mastering tool is an excellent choice for digital courseware, for both online and in-person courses. While there is room to growth on ensuring equitable results and equitable experiences, Mastering’s customization allows instructors to retain their own voice and excellent experience for learners.

Mastering is an excellent courseware that allows faculty to customize content and provides students with an easy-to-use adaptive platform. Frequent low-stakes tests make self-testing easy. The structure is easy to follow for the learner. Data is easy to export for further analysis.

Areas for growth could be in the intentional inclusion of equity principles throughout the design and expanding the definition of “equity” to go beyond a focus of students with disabilities. Expanding opportunities for peer-to-peer collaboration would also be beneficial.

4 / 5
Total Equity Rating
Existence and quality of product attributes that promote equitable outcomes for African American/Black, LatinX, Indigenous/Native American, Asian American, Pacific Islander and Southeast Asian, and Alaskan Native students, poverty-affected students, and first-generation students.

Pearson has some research studies on the success of their products across students from different backgrounds, which is a good start. They also have detailed information about serving students with disabilities.

None of Pearson’s efficacy studies focused on Mastering and equity specifically. Content about "equity" referred to serving students with a disability. There were no examples of content situating students within the example course content provided.

Efficacy

4 / 5
Total Efficacy Rating
Existence and quality of research that supports a product's effectiveness in improving student learning outcomes.

Pearson presents many efficacy studies on their website—substantially more than most other vendors. They include a search and filter feature, allowing users to find studies by institution type or by keyword, etc. Some studies focus on issues of efficacy.

Most of the studies seemed to be case studies with examples of effectiveness. It's unlikely that many studies that showed a lack of effectiveness would be included in these. Very few third-party studies were included. It’s unclear if Pearson offers support to model studies for institutions, but the inclusion of many similarly-formatted case studies suggests a level of support.

Functionality

5 / 5
Total Functionality Rating
Existence and quality of product attributes that relate to instructional design and user experience.

Mastering is a robust and user-friendly product that incorporates multiple facets of learning science to personalize learning for students. It also employs a logical interface for faculty that is highly customizable for varying curricular needs. Content is well organized, progress tracking is intuitive, and the data analytics provide useful information to guide decision making.

There are few student-to-student collaboration or interaction opportunities within the platform, with the limited collaboration opportunities tied specifically to only a portion of the overall tool-set. Opportunities are also currently limited for students to self-reflect or share the success of their work in the course externally in the form of badges, e-portfolio artifacts, etc.
