Overall

Revel is helpful overall since it can be used in various ways. The higher scores in functionality, systems capabilities, and efficacy support the potential benefits to using the platform; however, the absence of disaggregated data by racial/ethnic or gender groups reduces the impact and rigor of the provided efficacy studies. Descriptive data do suggest a general increase in engagement of students with content, which could enhance their learning experience.

A strong component of Revel is its usability and measurement abilities. A highlight of this is evidenced in Revel’s ability to provide rich learner data and the intuitive dashboards to access the data.

Overall, Revel has limited consideration as to how to support or customize content for specific student groups. This is reflected in the lack of disaggregated results from case studies and the lack of correlative evidence between platform usage and student success. It is unclear how diverse groups would respond to Revel. The limited fidelity in the study designs makes it difficult to generalize the benefits of Revel confidently.

Equity

4 / 5
Total Equity Rating
Existence and quality of product attributes that promote equitable outcomes for African American/Black, LatinX, Indigenous/Native American, Asian American, Pacific Islander and Southeast Asian, and Alaskan Native students, poverty-affected students, and first-generation students.

Pearson’s equity commitment demonstrates a high-level awareness; they describe the core of the platform's design is through a lens of efficacy for student success. The equity-minded language in Revel’s materials is evident, as is visual representation of diverse persons.

While the case studies provide the descriptive data on the demographics of research subjects, there is no evidence of disaggregated information regarding student success. There is also little/no way to support learners in various ways depending on background as a result of this.

Efficacy

4.5 / 5
Total Efficacy Rating
Existence and quality of research that supports a product's effectiveness in improving student learning outcomes.

The diversity in the high number of case studies representing US institutions is a high point in Revel’s efficacy work, and each case study represents practitioner-selected uses of the courseware.

Because each case study is conducted by instructors and focuses on assessment data, there is limited rigor and fidelity in the studies across institutions. The use of assessment data without correlations or comparative control groups limits the studies’ validity.

Functionality

4.5 / 5
Total Functionality Rating
Existence and quality of product attributes that relate to instructional design and user experience.

There is evidence of alignment of instructional materials and assessments/questions with Learning Outcomes through the highly structured, user-friendly design across multiple platforms like mobile devices.

The customization features do not appear to allow for including other resources, and while the platform has intuitive components, simple things like navigating the textbook were not intuitive.

Systems Capabilities

4.5 / 5
Total Systems Capabilities Rating
Technical components that indicate systems compatibility, ease of implementation, and data management capabilities.

One of the stronger elements was the richness of learner reports and the instructor dashboard that allows detailed analysis of student performance and progress. Content management within Pearson's ecosystem is simple, letting instructors select and remove materials for their needs/contexts.

Though Pearson claims this product fully integrates with all popular LMSs (besides Schoology and Sakai), the reviewers were not able to test these integrations during the review process.
